2013 was not a golden year in sports at The Evergreen State College. However, despite the losses and disappointments, there are some diamonds in the rough.

Evergreen volleyball fans can finally take the bags off their heads and hold their siphons high as the team ended a streak of 51 consecutive losses with a 3-1 victory over the University of Montana Western on Aug. 24. It was their first win since Oct. 30 of 2010. The Geoducks ended the season with a record of 8-15, a promising sign for a team that had won 11 matches in the previous six seasons combined. Senior Victoria Love earned a spot on the All-Cascade Conference First Team. Look for the Geoducks to continue improving in the 2014 season.

The Evergreen men’s soccer team started 2013 with high expectations after putting together one of the best seasons in program history, but was unable to deliver and ended the season 7-8-3 and out of playoff contention. The women’s team managed to slightly improve their record from 2012, but still stumbled to 3-11 after dropping six of their first seven games.

Meanwhile, in basketball, the Evergreen men opened the season with a victory before promptly dropping their next 12.  They fell to a forgettable 1-23 in 2013.  The women have had a bit more success, starting the season 4-3 before a five game losing streak. Their season has been highlighted by forward Brittany Gray being named the Red Lion’s Women’s Player of the Week back in November. Hopefully, the Lady Geoducks can continue adding to the win column during the second half of the season!

2013 showed signs of promise. 2014 could be even better. So get out and support your Evergreen Geoducks this upcoming calendar year!

In basketball, both the men and women return to action against Northwest Christian University on January 24th at the CRC.
