Almost a year ago, the first edition of the Evergreen Media and Film Festival took place in Purce Hall on June 6th. Amidst a drought of media courses, Evergreen filmmakers had a venue to share their work and make connections. I have made a handful of observations about the campus filmmaking community, having stretched the course catalog thin by taking any class with the slightest bearing to film and video. One observation is the scattered nature of the community, with most of the institutional drive coming from within Media Services, where its student employees hold the most access to equipment and resources. Another thing I’ve noticed is that many students don’t feel like they have the opportunity to get their work out there. The event last year was certainly a success, but could have done with more visibility. I’d like to see this festival become a more long term tradition and I think by getting the word out there, we can make this a reality.
I’m happy to report that the Evergreen Media and Film Festival will be back for its second year. The screening will be in Purce Hall 1 at 7 PM on Wednesday, June 4th. Absolutely everyone is encouraged to submit projects they want to share with Evergreen campus. Short films? Music videos? Documentaries? Video for class? Awesome, anything goes really, we want to see what Evergreen Filmmakers have to offer! We are setting only two parameters: projects 1) need have a visual element and 2) be under 10 minutes to receive priority for selection. We will begin accepting submissions on May 14th and close submissions on May 28th.
To those with unfinished projects in the works right now, sorry for the late notice. But, I highly encourage you to try to get them in before the deadline. The more films we get, the more of a bonafide film festival we can make. Having an annual, accessible and approachable screening could do a lot in encouraging a culture of creativity on campus. A culture that everyone seems to want back. The screening will be completely free and open to everyone, I hope you all join us!
