Congratulations! You’ve been admitted. You’ve signed up for classes. You’re scared shitless and you have no friends…yet. But you’re interested in a lot and would like to meet like-minded students with similar interests and maybe even make some lifelong friendships. The question is, HOW?

By joining or starting a Registered Student Organization, of course!

Officially called Registered Student Organizations, RSO’s are a great way for students to engage with their academic interests outside the classroom and to explore personal curiosities in the context of community.

Now, you should absolutely check out the groups that are already in operation here at Evergreen, because odds are there is something for everyone. For those of you with ideas for new groups; read on for a step-by-step guide on how to start your own registered student organization, provided by The Evergreen State College’s Student Activities website.

Have an Idea

Almost any subject or pastime that brings people together can be the seed of a great student group: hobbies, academic subjects, communities, issues, or politics.

If your idea involves recreational sports or other athletic equipment, contact the Constantino Recreation Center (CRC) about sports and recreation clubs.

See an Advisor

Call, email, or drop in at Student Activities to talk to an activities advisor. You’ll have a chance to talk about your ideas and goals. Advisors will make sure your idea for a group is a good fit, or help you figure out some other way to realize your vision.

Find at Least Three People

A new student group needs at least four people. Congratulations, you already have the first person! If you already have at least three other people, then you’re ready to take the next step.

If you don’t have four people, it’s a good chance to start getting the word out. Try connecting with students on Greener Commons or Facebook and put up fliers. Advisors can also help you set up and promote an interest meeting.

Sign Up for a Workshop (At Student Activities Front Desk)

All four people will need to go to the Registration Workshop, a one-hour workshop to introduce you to the rules and resources for student groups. At the workshop, you will learn about the resources available on campus, how to build your group base, how to plan an event on campus, and how to apply for funds. You will also complete a registration packet as a group, to explain what you are all about.

Registered Student Organizations are one of the best ways to engage with the Greener community, expand your knowledge of beloved subjects, and make new friends. The process of starting one may not exactly be quick and easy, but nothing worth having ever comes easy, and Student Activities is here to help and support you through the entire process. Go forth and organize!
